Foil To My Bane!

Courtesy: Inmagine.com

The melancholy digits on the mark-sheet  nonchalantly displayed themselves. Every time I looked at them I saw a dim future. If only I had worked harder, I kept thinking while mentally kicking myself.

Not a day had passed since tenth results were out and people around me were already flagging me and mouthing pasquinades.

Worse, my friends had done well and this chip was gingerly placing itself on my shoulder. I knew scoring low didn't make me less intelligent but it did showcased me as one.

My worrisome thoughts though were directed towards my parents. They hadn't much said till then. Hadn't reacted in any certain way.

Did they just stop talking to me? Did they disown me? Hell I deserved every bit of it.
I never thought text books were meant for me. Mathematics and I were from different planets and a few more subjects didn't share my genetic structure. The only subjects that appealed me were English and Biology; the ones I generally topped. I didn't like others and I couldn't sit through them. I knew this attitude would fetch me scores that are less rich in academic culture. Yet, I didn't care. But, now with those predicted marks and acerbic comments from certain very concerned family friends and nothing from my parents was reducing my faith in myself to crumbles.

Were my parents in shock? Why weren't they saying something? I then realized dad wasn't at home. I couldn't muster the courage to ask mom where was he? Mom too was engaged in kitchen.
Boycotted was I! "Definitely deserve it", I told myself.

I began to rifle through my options. Options to illuminate my future that looked like a dark cavern. I wanted to be a writer, always have, but I had to show my academic prowess. I was invariably told that these numbers will only push me to Arts and I knew they were right. Scoring well, no matter what stream, was now my only goal. Novelist was forgotten.

The door-bell rang. I knew it was dad. I didn't move. I didn't look at that direction. Just stared at the paper I was scribbling in.
I heard them murmuring. Were they to send me to some sort of exile? I sat on my spot motionless anticipating a sentence I was ready for.
The murmur had stopped and I felt their presence around me. I heard a pin drop in that nano moment. It was a murderous silence.
And then something happened. I was being crushed by my parents literally. They both were hugging me so tight I could feel my lungs struggling with their job.

Hug! They should be screaming at me shouldn't be hugging me.

Their lips were now pressing themselves against my forehead and cheeks.

Kisses! Oh my God, I have driven them mad. I turned to them and saw them smiling. Smiles that were assuring me they weren't crazy. Smiles assuring me I was still their daughter. Phew!

The smiles then were replaced with words. They weren't miffed at me nor had I shamed them. They told me how the scores could never take away my intelligence, my dignity, my future or anything else unless I give them up.
These were just part of life and not life itself.
Dad then showed me the reason of his absence. He had got me O. Henry's short story collection and mom announced she was making my favorite pulav.
The silence treatment was just to make me contemplate that on my thoughts, my needs, my actions. They know me well, if they hadn't given me that space, I would have taken things for granted.
With tears rolling down my cheeks and hugging my beloved patents, I looked at the tomb and smiled. Future was so bright.

Till date, those moments make me smile, optimize me, and fill me with love.

Tracing The Beginning

Image: Random fromGoogle

Imagine you stumble upon a name that has a tag to it saying, s/he is the first person of your lineage. You are her/his descendent. No matter how vague the information might be or no matter how high your right eyebrow might jump over its authenticity, the truth is, it would be fascinating.
My adrenaline gland would definitely do some record breaking high jumps if I get my hands on such information.

Where did my family gene launch from? Where did it all evolve? Where there any foreign gene involved if yes then which ones and when? Did some lady look like me? Am I a photocopy of the female precursor or um a male in mannerism?

Raised in a Hindu family, I became aware of my Gotra which they say tells you about your lineage. An interesting thing to record I say. Though that can’t exactly give me my family tree given there are many Kashyaps all over the world, may be in millions and finding my kinfolk among them would be a not-so- bright task. Rishi Kashyap however, became my object of interest and I am still trying to get acquainted with him. I’m trying to identity with him but, his many wives and many children with various opposite traits are already mystifying me.

Mythology might not give the pleasure of unearthing my lineage, I was privileged enough to come across a few names of my ancestors. The names sadly impede at the great great grand fathers and mothers from both my parents’ sides. That didn’t complete my family tree, but I have names.
The interesting part nevertheless, was covered by my dad long ago, when he told me stories of our predecessors. Some interesting characters they were. All zamindars, clad in crisp silk Kurta and dhoti , and a hooqah beside them. I am curious if they were those good-for-nothing-music-lover kinds or did they paint a different picture altogether. How were the ladies of the households? My grand mom generation ladies had their equal footing in the family, was it same with the earlier generation too? A certain ancestor I hear was loyal to his Queen and ostracized the British. Grandpa was a freedom fighter then perhaps that piece might be true; i.e. if we believe the gene pool carry such traits.

These and many questions often churn out and to appease their heat, one of my bucket list items is to locate our ancestral Havelies (both paternal and maternal). Just to feel the walls that witnessed the lives of the people who lived their and the ground they walked upon. Who knows, I might chance upon a descendant of a neighbor or a family friend.  I am not sure if the villas still exist, I don’t know if a skyscraper or a mall would welcome me when I trace the addresses. Nonetheless, I would like to find them. I want to find them. That would be the main reason to visit our neighbor; visit Dhaka and Faridpur.
The success rate of this hunt is unknown. Till then, I will take delight in the stories and weave my own fantasies around them and enjoy the delicious recipes of the family.

Lessons From My Hero, My Father.

‘I am writing ‘10 life lessons I learnt from my father’ at Parentous.com‘

Dad and Me
From rocking me till I fell into deep slumber to spinning me till I screamed my lungs out, happily… from scolding me with his deep masculine voice for not being a good girl to let me hit him for yelling at me; he has been there like a strong pillar in my life, since the time I came into this world, loving me, protecting me, caring for me, yelling at me, going crazy with me. He is the first man I fell in love with and with every passing day, my love for him only increases many folds… he is my hero, my Dad.

Whatever today I am, its because of my parents and when, Parentous.com gave an opportunity to write about 10 life lessons I learnt from my Father (celebrating Father’s day week), I knew it was time to let my thoughts flow. Though, 10 is too less a number, even, 100 would have been. However, this is how I was molded through 10 of his many teachings which he not only preached but practiced as well…
1)      Since my playgroup days, I remember how Dad kept telling me the importance of time. He always showed the importance of punctuality in every day life. To reach a venue half an hour ago to avoid traffic or any kind of delays, thus, respecting an appointment I made should be one of my priorities.

2)      Never to forget a helping hand is one of the important lessons I have received from Dad. He always says, if someone helps you even with a one rupee always remember and be thankful to that, because, at that moment that one rupee was the most important thing for you and s/he helped you with it.

3)      My first lesson on secularism was from my Dad. Today, he likes to say that I am more secular than him; I beg to differ here.

4)      Compassion is the essence of humanity; this is something I have observed since childhood. He taught me to help others, understand people’s problem by being in their shoes and be kind even to strangers.

5)      Past is History, Future is Mystery and Today is a gift that is why we call it a Present.
I have seen Dad to live in the present and cherish every moment of it and I have treasured this lesson to the hilt.

6)      Whatever you do, give your 200% to it; another precious lesson Dad taught me through preaching and practicing. “Sincerity is the key to achieve 100% success”, he tells me often and its definitely my mantra for everything I do.
7)      Always Follow up. No matter what the task is, who the person is on the other end, never fail to follow up.

8)      A very important lesson I have learnt from Dad is to be Humble. He always tells me “no matter where you reach, keep your feet on the ground and remember your roots”; hence I am rooted and I know I will be all my life.
9)      I have learnt and inherited one lesson from my Dad and that is, Patience; so much so that I know I have left him behind in being patient, nevertheless, the truth remains- its because of him.

10)  One of the many talents I have inherited from my Dad is cooking, and one lesson he taught me to hone my culinary skills is to remember, cooking is an art that uses all our 5 senses and we need to please all of them.

These and more have made me what I am today... thank you Dad for being there for me, I love you.

Fun personified ..!

Sunday was special... Mom - Dad celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary. *smiles*
Settling for a 'small' celebration this year (we had a good reason for it... don't ask), a nice spread, for three of us (yes a spread for only three, we bongs take our food pretty seriously), with some mouth wattering desserts for lunch, was laid, followed by an old Bollywood comic flick.."Chameli Ki Shaadi" *what an apt movie for anniversary :P *, at home. A similar spread was laid for supper as well, which we gorged on with BIG smiles on our faces.

Happiness can be gathered in so many little/simple things - Being together with your loved ones, relishing home food... listening to your folks remembering their days of youth...teasing each other.. watching classic movies, all this with so much of laughter and giggles... is FUN personified ;)

Fun filled Weekend !!

Family, Friends & Food --- what else do you need for a perfect weekend. For me its the best recipe for FUN!

Saturday :
It began by visiting one of my close friends (friends since we were 15), around noon. Seeing each other, after almost 6 months, made us a couple of chatting machines, both trying to give away so many details on so many topics... We just had to cover everything that happened in those months.
Phew! Catching up can be so tiring...  *giggles*.

The food we enjoyed :
Dhokla
Dhokla -- An Indian snack made with a fermented batter of chickpea flour. Served with Green chutney and garnished with chopped coriander leaves.

Jalebis
Images : Inmagine

Jalebis -- An Indian sweet, which is deep fried and then dipped in sugar syrup.

The Evening :
The fun continued in the evening, with 2 good friend. It wasn't a planned one.
The get together was filled with laughter, smirks, serious looks, giggles, gossips, rolling of eyes and loads of chit-chats. I thank my friends and their impulsive arrangement :D

We polished of these :
Pav Bhaji

Pav Bhaji -- A fast food dish. Pav = Bread/ bun....bhaji = vegetable dish. The bhaji is mashed, the pav is buttered on all the sides and is served with chopped onions and a wedge of lemon.
Mango Lassi

Mango Lassi -- Is a savory drink made of yogurt and mango pulp. Lassi is also flavored with various other fruits and dry fruits.

Friends who joined us later.. :P
Images : By Friend.

And this is how you make your friends, who aren't present, to join the fun... Take a napkin, get a pen (beg, borrow, steal) and sketch your friends, whom you are missing...and then, of course.. *click*
Please note : DO NOT .. I repeat .. DO NOT  exhibit your drawing skills here.. save them for the galleries.

Sunday : Happy Mother's Day .. !!

The day was wonderfully spent with two mothers.. my Mom and Aunty... and my gift to both of them was a bowl of Kheer, which I made for the first time.. and I did a fantastic job *smiles*.

Kheer
Kheer -  Rice pudding...a sweet dish prepared with rice, milk, sugar and dry fruits.

Don't I love just Looooooove weekends .. Can't wait for the next one *Winks*
P.S.  1 weekend a month is reserved for cheating on my diet schedule..... *puppy eyes*.
