How Idiotic is The Box?

Image: Inmagine.com

We humans are latched to Pet Peeves (PPs). Everyone has their own list of PPs and being no exception to this phenomenon I have a collection of my own. No you are not going to read about everything that annoys me, for my life is an open book akin to that of Tom Riddle's Diary. Write the question and you will be illuminated with information only which I wish to give away or else it's just blank; exceptions exist. And for those who are getting delicious ideas that it's a Horcrux…let me disappoint you with a "No".

Coming back to my PPs, nowadays a certain pet has begun to annoy me the most and with time it's just getting worse; the Indian TV shows. Yes, Indian Television shows have become my Pet Peeves. 99% of them are trash. It's argued that, the absolute reason for producing such soaps and shows are the viewers. Really? R E A L L Y?

Well, to begin with- people don't have many choices to choose from, they eat what they are fed.
With no choice given and television being the most convenient source of amusement for most of the housewives or even others who seek a break from their long hours of labor and switch on the TV set to find some solace in the form of pure entertainment.

The ongoing fad, the Reality shows, which are competitive in nature, entered the industry with freshness, promising crisp summer breeze for us to breathe. But soon a pattern emerged. Judges make same old comments… actors and directors promote their movies on these shows...contestants talk about their struggles, their financial conditions and people sympathize and vote. No guesses for the real winners here.

If these serial/soaps/shows are the demi-gods of television then News Channels are the God. Besides, having everything "Breaking" in their channels, they also choose to play a piece of melodramatic music even for a grieving news.

Then we have our anchors/hosts. Most of them if not all, shout and scream as if they are on a mission to damage our ear drums and sabotage our hearing abilities. They are music lovers too; they sing announce the names or the scores
of the contestants- "And the score is... Twentyyyyyyyyy". I always wonder if a simple "20" would be boring.

Some might ask me to switch a channel if I don't like what is being aired, well, being the bearer of well nurtured intelligent cells, I certainly do that, but it hurts watching the motherly brigade glued to serials which plays monstrous games with their EQs and IQs. Does the Television really have to live up to it's nick; the Idiot box?
I crave for gems like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Surabhi, Shirman-Shirmati, Office-Office, etc.
The only Indian show from the recent lot that has shown great quality is Satyameva Jayate and I am lookign forward for its next season.

I want to see our channels to come up with some great shows. Shows where ladies don't look like they are always ready to attend a wedding ceremony or where a shocking expression doesn't mean high pitched triplets; “kya-kya-kya”, along with the camera panning the actor's face from different angles or where the over the top, hideous expressions of emotions don't exist. And better news channels with no chillum-chilli and nothing breaking.

*Fingers Crossed*
Wrapping up for now... off to watch a movie...oops its 12.25 am, will catch up with the movies tomorrow.

P.S. Those who don't speak Harry Potter, you may Google for Tom Riddle's Diary and Horcrux.

  2. You know these days I have almost quit watching TV, except for the weekends when I watch JDJ and 'Comedy Nights with Kapil'. You are bang on right. The channel producers just want to rake in money these days. So, they keep bringing back those box-office biggies 'Bigg Boss', 'KBC', 'Indian Idol' and the likes. I don't mind them, but it is the attitude of the channel wallahs which pains me.
I love horror so much, but there is a dearth of good horror shows or films in India (no, dont't you even talk of RGV).

PS- You know, it brought a smile on my lips when you mentioned about 'Shreeman Shrimati' and 'Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai'. The former is the number one TV show i have ever watched and the latter features in the top 5 or 7.
I remember u know that Shreeman Shrimati would beam on Tuesdays at 8 pm (they changed it from Friday, 8 pm) and I had my maths tuition during those days. I guess i was in class 6 or something. And I would tell my sir right after entering his home, that "Sir aaj mujhe 7:45 tak chod dijiyega." :P

PPS- I didn't know that you too are a Potter fan. I thought me and Bushra were the only ones.

  4. Yep, the channels are like that giving us mental swirls and swings.Pitifully, this happens always. If one channel gets its TRP rating up for a program, then the other channels present that programs in different avatars.

  7. Very annoying, thank you very much. But sill, I'd prefer Arnab and his incoherent screeching to Indian idol and comedy circus any day of the week.

And by the way, I can do the 'kya-kya-kya' pretty well and without the thunderous music. I'm a small time mime artist of sorts, you know! And I love to amuse first timers with my little performance!

Now .. when we meet, the first thing I want you to do is the "Kya-kya-kya" thing... :D

  8. I have always been saying that Indian Television scaled from up to down as time passed. The shows in the 90s were so much smarter, funnier and were greatly written.
These days, the most that annoys me are not the sas-bahu sagas (I metaphorically, had my dog ate the channel number buttons on my remote, on which these shows are broadcast-ed) but, the shows on MTV and Channel V. They are nothing but, the same sas-bahu saga in minis and tank tops. Difference - even the boys there, acts like bahus. I hated shows like Roadies and other similar ones from the start but, I was shocked to see the fanatic fans of those shows which is why they annoy me the most as they are ones watched my coming generation.
Anyway, I am exploring lots of bloggers these days and from all, I could relate to you the most. We should be blog budddies! Haha.
Phewww longest comment in the history of comments.

I loath shows like roadies, splitsville..etc.. just one episode was enough for me to detest them...and I so agree with you .. how the next gen are growing up loving these shows. They are pathetic.

I too feel we should be blog buddies.. I love your visits ..and your comments make it clear to me..that we have so much in common :D
and this I feel this is one of the lengthiest replies in the history of blogging..and if not then at least on my blog :D :P

  9. Kapil's show is a good watch..
The newer reality shows are not at all interesting..especially if we reach home after a tiring day..and soap operas have always picked my brains..
Well, I have written a short piece about reality shows to put my view forward: http://karan-sampat.blogspot.in/2013/04/do-reality-shows-do-more-harm-than-good.html

  10. I hate watching TV. My husband loves watching it and so its like clash of the titans. Being a working person, I get no time to write and read if I continue to watch TV as well. And you know yourself how TV only adds various flavours of screaming " Twentyyyyy" to your life :D :D

I can see in comments, Kapil nights is famous and I would confess I like it too :)
